Hearing Test for Pensioners & DVA Veterans

The Hearing Services Program (HSP) run by the Commonwealth of Australia provides subsidies to all the Pensioners and DVA veterans for a comprehensive hearing test. Family Hearing Centre located in Newcastle & Lake Macquarie is an accredited hearing centre to provide hearing tests for Pensioners and DVA card holders. We pride ourselves in providing accurate, reliable and diagnostic hearing tests for pensioners and DVA veterans for FREE.

Who is eligible for a FREE Hearing Test?

Hearing Services Program recognises below card holders for a Free Hearing Test.

  • Centrelink Pension Concession Card Holder
  • DVA Pension Concession Card
  • DVA Gold Health Repatriation Card
  • DVA White Health Repatriation Card (for Hearing Loss)
  • Dependent of a Concession Card Holder.

Unfortunately, cards like Health Card & Seniors Card aren't recognised by the Hearing Services Program for the subsidy.

Why Hearing Tests for Pensioners and DVA Veterans are Vital

  • Early Detection of Hearing Loss: Age-related hearing loss, known as presbycusis, is common among pensioners. DVA veterans may also experience hearing loss due to exposure to loud environments during their service.
  • Enhanced Communication: Hearing loss can hinder communication, leading to social isolation and frustration. Pensioners and veterans often rely on effective communication with healthcare providers and loved ones.
  • Safety and Awareness: Hearing loss can impact safety, as it may prevent individuals from hearing warning signals or emergency alarms.
  • Mental Health Benefits: Untreated hearing loss has been linked to an increased risk of depression and cognitive decline. For pensioners and DVA veterans, maintaining good mental health is crucial.

Types of Hearing Tests for Pensioners and DVA Veterans

  • Otoscopic Inspection: This is a visual inspection of the ear canal and ear drum to detect presence of any wax build-up in the ear and health of the eardrum .
  • Pure-Tone Audiometry: This common hearing test assesses an individual's ability to hear the faintest tones at various frequencies. It helps determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
  • Speech Audiometry: This test evaluates an individual's ability to understand spoken words at varying volumes. Speech tests can be conducted for both quiet and noisy situations.
  • Tympanometry & Acoustic Reflexes: This test examines the health of the eardrum and the middle ear. This is an objective test and provides clear indication of any middle ear involvement that could be potentially resolved via medical management.

What happens after the Hearing Test in Pensioners & Veterans?

Following a hearing test, an audiologist at Family Hearing Centre would be able to discuss the results of the test in detail and guide you in the appropriate direction for management or treatment. In some cases, the patients are referred back to GP or ENT specialist for medical management. In other cases, audiologists at Family Hearing Centre continue to discuss rehabilitative methods of managing hearing loss. The most common method is fitting hearing aids.
